Figure 2

Neuroprotective effects of nicotine, JWB 1-84-1, and JAY 2-22-33 against the Aβ 1-42 peptide as determined in a cell viability assay in rat cortical neuron primary culture. Pretreatment of the cultures with various concentrations of nicotine, JWB 1-84-1, and JAY 2-22-33 for 24 hours was followed by exposure to the Aβ1-42 peptide (100 nM) for another 24 hours. Cell viability for each treatment was calculated as percentage survival rate and compared to a negative control (i.e., cultures without the Aβ1-42 peptide, nicotine or choline analog). Each bar represents the mean ± S.E.M derived from at least 7 replicates per concentration and each experiment was repeated at least 2-3 times per drug. *p < 0.05 compared to wells with the Aβ1-42 peptide, but no nicotine or choline analog.
