Activity of the NADPH oxidase complex in male and female rats. Lucigenin-enhanced chemiluminescence (A) and western blot (B) analysis of the NADPH complex activation in the ventral mesencephalon of males and female rats with estrogen (ovx +E2). Chemiluminescence analysis revealed significantly higher NADPH activity in males (A). Western blot analysis revealed that males had significantly higher expression of NADPH oxidase subunit p47phox (B). Data, expressed as relative light units (RLU/min/mg protein; A) and p47phox protein expression (B) was obtained relative to the GAPDH band value and then normalized to ovx+E2 values (100%). Data are means ± SEM. *p < 0.05 (Student's t test).
