Proteolytic generation of Aβ. APP is cleaved by β-secretase resulting in the generation of membrane-tethered CTF-β and secretion of APPS-β. The CTFβ contains the full Aβ domain and subsequent cleavage by γ-secretase liberates Aβ into the extracellular milieu and the APP intracellular domain (AICD) into the cytosol.
