Sagittal schematic of locations and projections of MS and VDB in mice. The MS is located in the middle of the septum and many neurons are embedded among the precommissural fibers of the fornix. The VDB is located below the MS along the ventromedial and dorsomedial borders of the LS. The VDB projects via the fornix and fimbria to both the dorsal and ventral hippocampus formation, whereas the MS projects only to the ventral hippocampus.
