Hypothesis on different pathologies in the cuprizone model: A Primary ‘oligodendrocytopathy’, where the effects of cuprizone on the oligodendrocyte population induces cell death. B ‘Toxic innate immunity’, where innate immune cells of the CNS take on a cytotoxic phenotype towards the oligodendrocyte population as a reaction to an initial damage to oligodendrocytes. C ‘Primary immunocytopathy’, in which the effect of cuprizone on CNS innate immune cells triggers a cytotoxic phenotype of those cells towards oligodendrocytes, without prior damage to the oligodendrocyte population
